Red Hat® EX188: Level Up Learning Club Session 3: 10/14/25

Today’s RHLS Module(s): Chapter 2: Podman Basics

Today’s focus: Chapter 2 is a big set of EX188 modules. Exploring how Red Hat positions Podman as the bridge between traditional Linux administration and the OpenShift® container lifecycle, from building and networking containers to managing their lifecycle like mini operating systems.

What we walked through:

  • Podman fundamentals
  • Creating containers
  • Container networking and DNS
  • Port forwarding
  • Accessing containerized services
  • Container transparency & debugging
  • Container lifecycle management

Key takeaway: Podman shows us Red Hat’s overall enterprise container philosophy in a single CLI tool: secure defaults, transparent change sets, and reproducible environments. Every command teaches us to think in terms of isolated, composable systems, a mindset that scales directly into OpenShift.

Next session: Containerfile fundamentals and image building with podman build. This will set the stage for how OpenShift uses BuildConfigs and ImageStreams to operationalize this workflow.
